New Postpartum Pricing
As a small business owner, I do a lot of thinking about how to price my services. There are plenty of calculations to think about when setting a price for something or an hourly rate for your time including your own business expenses like a business name or license, insurance, a website, gas money, tools and goods you need to purchase. There’s also childcare, trainings and continuing education, time spent actually working with clients, and time spent brainstorming, texting, calling, emailing, and generally having your attention engaged by someone outside of your family and (non business related) community.
As someone who considers herself kind of an average, middle class American, I know that the idea of paying someone $35/hour to come into your home and help with a new baby seems pretty spendy and not really feasible. There are plenty of people for whom this is no big deal, and there are some for whom this is completely out of the question.
I truly believe that having a baby is a life changing event for anyone, regardless of how much money you make. And I really want to make postpartum care more accessible to those who do not have unlimited resources.
I also recognize that it is a good business practice to incentivize customers to buy more - whether you are selling goods or services, you can almost always make more money if people are buying more from you. For a while my prices have reflected this mindset - I had set up packages that cost less per hour the more hours you commit to. This is a common practice and not one that I believe will go away any time soon. But as the sole owner and employee of my company, it’s possible for me for make changes to reflect my priorities.
At this point, my postpartum services will be provided at a flat hourly rate. My rate is $35 but it is negotiable. If you need support and know that postpartum care will likely be a huge financial burden, please contact me and I am happy to try and work something out.
I do not believe building a big thriving business is what I am here to do. To me, serving families and helping new parents in a very challenging time of life feel supported and a little more cared for is more important and meaningful. It is an honor to be invited into these special moments and I truly believe the more we care for each other, the more we heal the world.
